• Wrong category chosen in self-assessment tax

Hi,

I have paid self assesment tax in wrong category for last year 2013-14.I should have filled Chalan no 280 but chosen 282 instead. Now IT has raised a demand and when i filed rectification they informed me that I have paid it in wrong category. They had asked me to contact my AO, which is in Kolkata while I am working in Pune. What should I do, as its not possible for me to travel to Kolkata

You can perhaps write to the AO and follow it up. Later you may take it up with higher officials and still further you may take it up with Ombudsman.

In the first case you need to approach the AO to get the same rectified. It can be done , there may not be any problem, it can be done by your AO. You need to apply for change of jurisdiction and migration of PAN. First let us know which address you have quoted in the return. You can go to income taxefiling portal and get the jurisdiction.

you can send a request under section 154 to ITO in Calcutta, and see if anything can be done to give credit for the payment.

The concerned assessing officer is the one who processed your IT return for Asst yr 2013-14. If the file is transferred to another Assessing Officer, then such assessing officer will have to make correction. You will have to the concerned Chief Commissioner also to redress your issue.
