• Minor PAN card

My son's name is FirstName Lastname and he is a minor. Several years back pan card was applied, I dont know why but at that time the name given was "LASTNAME FIRSTNAME" in pan card. And so the 5th letter in PAN card now says "F". I have changed his name properly in pan card to "FIRSTNAME LASTNAME" ...But still the 5th letter doesn't change in PAN CARD. Several users have flagged this issue with opening account in SBI. My son will be turning 18 next year and My questions are
1) will this be an issue with IT Portal registration also due to 5th letter mismatch and name. Name is correctly entered now as per AADHAR.
2) Is it advisable to surrender this pan and apply a new PAN freshly just for this 5th letter mismatch in PAN? Also father name in his PAN is given as "LASTNAME FIRSTNAME" of father. Aadhar is not linked with his PAN. So is it OK if we apply for a new PAN.
3) What is the procedure to surrender the existing PAN

Please help. Thanks

Dear Sir/Madam,

The existing PAN should not be surrendered or replaced merely because the 5th character does not match the corrected surname. PAN is permanent; changes in name/father’s name should be made through a PAN correction request.

If the PAN database now contains the correct name, the 5th-character issue should not by itself require a fresh PAN. Applying for another PAN when one already exists is not advisable and may attract penalty under Section 272B.

Also, if your son has Aadhaar and is not in an exempt category, link Aadhaar with the existing PAN; minors are not generally exempt merely because of age.

If SBI or the Income-tax portal gives a validation error, the PAN records should first be checked and corrected through the appropriate PAN/Income-tax authority.

Please book a phone consultation with the PAN card, Aadhaar and correction acknowledgement for specific guidance.

Dear Sir,

Hope you are doing well.

Based on the facts provided, there is generally no need to surrender the existing PAN or apply for a fresh PAN merely because the 5th character remains F. Since the name has already been corrected in the PAN records to FIRSTNAME LASTNAME, the existing PAN should continue to remain valid.

It is advisable to verify that the PAN is active and that the name, date of birth and father's name are correctly recorded and consistent with Aadhaar. If the father's name requires correction, it should be corrected against the existing PAN.

If SBI raises an issue specifically due to the 5th character, the matter should preferably be escalated to its KYC/PAN verification team rather than obtaining a new PAN. The existing PAN can continue to be used after your son turns 18.

It would be advisable to schedule a telephonic consultation for a detailed discussion.

Thanks & Regards,
