• Mediclaim policy

Respected sir , I am govt servant in Tamilnadu govt. When we submit annual income tax calculation statement through treasury in Feb-2017 salary bill I was not allowed to deduct U/Sec.80D a sum of Rs.21800/- which I have paid for mediclaim policy taken for my wife and children. The reason stated by the treasury is that we are provided with govt aided medical insurance for which also I have paid Rs.2040.I was allowed to deduct so last year .Is there any change this year? Is the contention of the treasury is right?

Hi,

You can claim Section 80D Benefit for Medical Insurance for Self, spouse and children up to Rs. 25,000 for non-senior Citizens and Rs. 30,000 if the policy is for a Senior Citizen.

If the Treasury is not ready to accept the Insurance Premium of Rs. 21,800 u/s 80D, then let them deduct TDS accordingly. You can claim the same while filing your IT returns and claim Refund from IT Dept.
