• Medical expense

my daughter was an inpatient at a wilderness therapy program at the suggestion of our family counselor and psychologist. Our medical insurance had a specific exclusion for this type of program.. We paid nearly $80,000 out of pocket. The program has multiple psychologists on staff who worked with our daughter. Can we deduct this expense from our taxes? We are also working to get this reimbursed by our insurance company but likely will not know the outcome for a few more months. If we claim this deduction, will we need to later claim any reimbursement? if so, how and how would this affect our future tax returns? Also, our family twice traveled to Colorado to participate in therapy. Would these expenses be tax deductible as out of pocket health expenses?

Sir we think that this program is not covered in Section 80DDB of the Income Tax Act. You cannot claim deduction in Tax Returns. You can go through the Section once on google or so and can know the expenses covered.

You can claim the expenditure as a deduction, if the expenditure is more than 10% of your adjusted gross before the deduction is allowed.
